Book launch: Inclusive Design for Accessibility

  • by

We wanted to explore the “who” first, then the how and why.

Inclusive Design for Accessibility book on a table with coffee.

I’m so proud to be part of creating this resource for well, everyone. As co-author Denis Boudreau said, holding a published copy has left me a bit speechless.

In late 2024, Denis and Dale Cruse invited me to write a chapter for a new book on inclusive design practices with eleven other accessibility specialists and advocates.

With Chapter 6 of Inclusive Design for Accessibility, I cherished this chance to advocate for accessible content and challenge what some colleagues have been told in the past:

Words don’t matter. Content comes after the initial design.

I was thrilled to contribute to such a comprehensive, human-centered resource.

The book begins with the who and why before moving into the how, for everyone in your organization.

In my chapter 6, Creating Accessible Content, I provide authors with a quick and effective “Needs Walkthrough” exercise to spot-check their content, learn from people with disabilities and spark discussion in their teams.

The Needs Walkthrough is an exercise I’ve done for years within my W3C Accessibility Roles and Responsibilities Mapping (ARRM) workshops. I’ve facilitated sessions with product owners, HR managers, marketing specialists, and software procurement specialists. A lot of the time they’re unsure about how to approach.
